The Railroad
: The 1,756 mile transcontinental railroad is considered one of the greatest American technological achievements of the 19th century, completed in 1869 between Council Bluffs, Iowa/Omaha, Nebraska and Sacramento, California.  The "Golden Spike" is the ceremonial final spike driven by Leland Stanford to join the rails connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit, Utah.

The Stamp: Issued May 10, 1944 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Golden Spike ceremony, this stamp was printed in purple by the rotary press with  subject electric eye plates in standard size 84/100” x 44/100” in sheets of 50 with perforation 11 x 10-1/2 – 200.  61,303,000 stamps were issued and simultaneously placed on sale at Omaha, Nebraska, Ogden, Utah and San Francisco, California.

The Coin:  From 5,000 submissions, to three concepts, to the final sculptor-engraver’s rendering, on November 9, 2007 the Utah Quarter became the 45th coin in the U.S. Mint’s State Quarters Program.  As such it celebrates Utah’s Statehood, as well as the Golden Spike ceremony at the “Crossroads of the West” in Promontory, Utah.  There were 253,200,000 units struck at the Denver Mint and 255,000,000 at the Philadelphia Mint.

The Artist:  Glenn Loucks is a Michigan inventor, artist and entrepreneur.  This is his first piece of railroad memorabilia.  Thanks, please, to project collaborators Dave Cook, Mike Grant and Bil Kinney.
